Solutions to Chapter 45 Normal forms

A. Consider the following sentences:

  1. 1.

    (A→¬B)

  2. 2.

    ¬(A↔B)

  3. 3.

    (¬A∨¬(A∧B))

  4. 4.

    (¬(A→B)∧(A→C))

  5. 5.

    (¬(A∨B)↔((¬C∧¬A)→¬B))

  6. 6.

    ((¬(A∧¬B)→C)∧¬(A∧D))

For each sentence, find an equivalent sentence in DNF and one in CNF. We give a solution for (2). The truth table for ¬(A↔B) is:

A B ¬(A↔B)
T T F
T F T
F T T
F F F

A sentence in DNF can be read off from lines 2 and 3:

(A∧¬B)∨(¬A∧B)

and one in CNF from lines 1 and 4:

(¬A∨¬B)∧(A∨B).
